  • Creating a TSM Watch Band Cover! (a tutorial)

Hi friends, this is Nikki and I’m taking over the TSM blog today to share how I sewed my watch band. At the bottom is a video tutorial if you are more of a visual learner. This is a great scrap buster for all your stretch woven and canvas. I have a Garmin 4S and purchased the extra band on Amazon, but this should work with any buckle silicone/rubber watch band. The only other supplies you will need are double-sided tape (dst) and fray check. Start by measuring the width of your band to determine the width of the material you will be cutting. I wanted the width of my fabric to be half a square (1/16”) over 1/2" inch once finished, so I cut my fabric at 1-1/8” inch to have enough to turn both sides in to the center. I cut the length so I would have some extra to turn under the ends. My pieces ended up being about 5.5” long and 4.5” long, but this could differ depending on your band. Place a piece of double-sided tape (dst) down the center back of the material and fold both sides. Make sure your pieces don’t overlap or you might be able to see the bump from the other side once finished. I start with the open end on the flat side. This is the most difficult part of the whole thing for me. I put a piece of dst on the back near the edge and turn the edge under to try and match the curve of the edge of the band. Then clip to help hold in place. On the other end, fold the edge under and add a piece of dst to help hold in place. Make sure you have enough material to catch this side with your stitches. For the other piece, I like to start at the buckle with my folded under bit on the underside of the buckle. From here you will wrap your fabric through the buckle and estimate where you need to clip the fabric for your buckle to slide through. Cover your hole with a drop of fray check and slide your buckle through. Fold over the other end the same as you did the other piece. Now it’s time to sew!!! I have a jean 100/16 needle on my sewing machine which is what I usually use for my bag-making. I used regular Guttermann thread on this band. For my other band, I used Guttermann upholstery thread. I think it’s pretty forgiving as far as thread and needle go. Start as close to the end with the metal bar/clip as you can without hitting the bar, then go down to the other end, across the bottom and back up the other side. Be sure to leave your tails long enough to tie knots on the back of the band. Pull the front thread to the back, knot, and add fray check. Now all that’s left is to decide what size you normally wear and snip a tiny hole at that hole in the band. Add fray check around the hole and you are DONE!!! Let me know how it goes for you in the comments and in the TSM Facebook Group. I’d love to see all your new watch bands! Thanks for joining me and I hope you enjoyed my first ever tutorial! -Nikki Video Tutorial Here:

  • Let's Talk Bamboo Lycra!

When you think of TSM, what fabric base jumps to mind? Is it athletic brushed poly? A new base, such as vinyl or faux leather? Something entirely different? I realized this time of year we don't hear a lot about Bamboo Lycra. It is often mentioned during the summer, because of its moisture-wicking nature and lightweight appeal, but this is a base that is truly amazing year-round. Below is a compilation of our TSM Team's Bamboo Lycra sews so we can admire just how versatile this base truly is. Bamboo (BL) has the most beautiful drape. It is flowy and airy, while not having a tendency to 'grow' throughout your day of wear, as some other drapey knits may. It also has a silky-smooth feel, that makes it a dreamy base for almost any knit pattern you may want to dive into. Some of our favorite Bamboo Lycra sews have been the dresses our Team and Customers have created! Bamboo lends itself to being the perfect dress base, whether that be mini, knee, or maxi length! Of course, we can't leave out the absolute showstopping combo of TSM Ombres in Bamboo Lycra! Bamboo is also unique in that while it feels soft and sleek to the touch, is drapey and flowy, it also is very workable to create beautiful detailing in your sewing. These thumbhole cuffs Kellie created are stunning in themselves, but knowing the base is bamboo just makes them all the more impressive! The twist in this Twist-Top was also beautiful using Bamboo! The drape adds the most charming detail. Basic tees and loungewear have also been favorite Bamboo (BL) sews. Tees and tanks sewn with BL really are a summer staple for so many, but I have found, as well, that come winter they are perfect for layering. Even my most lightweight cotton tees can sometimes end up feeling stuffy under a cardigan, but a TSM Bamboo tee keeps me feeling comfortable and stylish! As we have seen, Bamboo is a great knit base. It is graceful and delicate in look, while being steadfast and versatile. Whether you are looking to sew a fitted top, or drapey cardi, you can't go wrong with what you choose. We hope this collection helps to inspire you on your next Bamboo Lycra sew! We are always inspired by you all as well, so please be sure to share your Bamboo creations with us in our Facebook group! Thank you for following along with me! -Tara

  • I Added an Exterior Pocket to Iolite!(pattern hack)

Hey all! I have my first ever TSM Patterns hack to share today! Before we get started, I do want to give the disclaimer that I am not a designer, nor a professional bag-maker, so my techniques used could absolutely be improved upon, but this is where my imagination, and emerging bag-making skills took me! A little Pinterest browsing, a little coffee, a confidence boost, and my outer access zipper pocket hack was born! So, let's get started, because I am so excited about this! I got the idea to hack Iolite with an outer zipper pocket from a bag I had seen on Pinterest. I loved the idea of an outside access pocket. Maybe you wanted a space closer to your person for your wallet (I plan to wear mine with the outside access zipper facing me), or a secret space to keep snacks that your kiddos wouldn't easily find, or a space dedicated to diapers, or whatever best suits your current needs! This pocket really has so many uses and possibilities! First, cut out Iolite as instructed in the pattern. We will be modifying the Side Panel, but all pieces will remain as designed until after we have added our interfacing. Create both front panels, as instructed, as well. Next, determine the height of your zipper. I wanted a 9" opening, so I cut my zipper at just slightly over 10". I then cut my pocket pieces to be 7"x10" (cut 2). Interface both pocket pieces with SF101 woven interfacing. If you would like a firmer lining on the inner side that faces the inside lining, you could use flex foam as an option. Lay your zipper, wrong side down, on top of one pocket piece, right side up. Sew at 1/4" seam allowance. Repeat with other pocket piece. Set aside. We will now cut out our zipper opening on the side panel. I used TSM vinyl for this Iolite, so I simply added a sealant to my raw edge after cutting, but if using a woven material, such as canvas, you will want to create a facing piece. (A helpful link to how to do this can be found in your Iolite pattern on page 13.) (It is important to note, that when marking your zipper opening, you are careful to put it on the correct side of your Side Panel piece. If you have a designated front and back panel, and wish for your zipper to be to your front or back while wearing, you will need to take extra care when drawing your zipper opening.) Measure up from the bottom of your side panel piece 1.5" and mark near the outer edge. Carefully mark 1/2" in from outer edge and 9" up from starting point you marked earlier. Then mark an additional 1/2" out from your outer edge markings. (Your starting and stopping points may differ based on the height of the zipper you want.) Draw your rectangle on your stabilizer, connecting all dots, and cut out. Prior to cutting out, you may want to add a strip of SF101 to add a little extra stability to the edge strip that will be left in place. This is a step I did not do, and did not experience problems with my vinyl stretching, but in thinking later on, I realized it would have been a good idea. You now have your zipper opening (side note, I really like using a seam ripper to cut my zipper openings. I am able to get clean lines and corners by doing this). Add your sealant, if using, to your raw edge, and allow to dry. Once your zipper opening is ready, add a bit of wash away, double-sided sticky tape to the sides of your zipper, and with your pocket pieces fully open, center your zipper into the opening. Press into place. (Note, make sure your zipper pull is at the top or bottom of your panel piece, depending on how you want your pocket to open. I have my pull resting at the top end of my panel while zipped closed) Sew around the zipper opening. Your zipper should now be set in place. Finish your pocket by gently pulling the pocket edges away from the zipper opening on the back side and sew around the pocket piece. Now it's time to add our side panel to the back panel! We need to be mindful not to stretch that delicate strip out; we want everything to still fit as it should. To help this, I clipped one clip at the top, one clip at the bottom, then continued up and down until I reached the center. Sew both panels together as instructed in the Iolite tutorial. The only thing to be mindful of, is to go slow at the zipper as to catch that thin strip within the seam allowance. From the outside we only want to see the zipper coming from the main panel and side panel seam. No vinyl should be seen sticking out. Before moving on to the rest of the rest of the Iolite tutorial, I gently finger-pressed my seam open, and trimmed out bulk from between the panel pieces, and then flipped the seam toward the center panel, pressed again with my fingers, and topstitched from the outside. This helped to keep my zipper pocket opening clean. Finally, sew the rest of Iolite and voila! Your modified Iolite is complete! I love that this hack is a simple add-on, and really does not impede on the rest of Iolite. It easily stays out of the way as you sew the pieces together, and the pocket is completely independent to your lining. It does not encroach on the room given in the inner lining. I am so excited to see this in use, and start working on my next! I hope this hack inspires you, and cannot wait to see what y'all do with it! Thank you so much for following along with me, and for sharing in my love of Iolite and Pinspirations! Please be sure to share you Iolites and Iolite outer pocket hacks in our Facebook group! We are so inspired by you! -Tara (Fabrics used: TSM Vinyl in Wild Wildflower Small Scale from PAP for exterior, and Aqua Faux Linen on Luxury Cotton for interior. Hardware: Idleblooms, rivets from Bedazzled on Etsy)

  • "What do you make out of Stretch Woven?"

Stretch woven is such a loved TSM base. From the moment it hit the shelves at The Styled Magnolia, it became an instant favorite. While every sewist has their favorite pattern to use Stretch Woven on, I hope to show you just how truly versatile of a base it is, and can be! Photo 1: Skirt sewn with Stretch Woven (SW) Photo 2: Backpack and shorts sewn with SW Photo 3: Trousers sewn with SW One of the most popular items we have seen sewn using Stretch Woven (SW) is shorts. The lightweight, moisture wicking nature of SW makes it a fabulous choice for shorts. They are breathable, moveable, airy, and non-sticky feeling in the height of summer. One of my personal favorite qualities is that sand doesn't stick to SW. We can go to the beach and not take the beach back home with us! A definite win. (A fun bonus is ordering ABP or Swim for a matching sports bra or swim top!) Boardshorts also have a 'wow' factor when sewn in Stretch Woven. Again, the lightweight feel makes them comfortable for all day wear, while the quick drying nature of Stretch Woven (SW) also makes it a perfect choice. The Jalie Patterns Boardshorts, Greenstyle Creations Motion Shorts, and Greenstyle Solana shorts have been a couple favorite Boardshort style patterns of our team to sew! We've loved seeing how many sewists have hacked either woven or knit patterns to accommodate the Stretch Woven(SW) in their fabric stash. Just a little alteration here and there, and your project is complete! Many woven patterns do not need adjustment at all. Possibly, like me, you just prefer the cool feel of Stretch Woven, and will switch out your cotton skirt piece for SW! One of the most impressive knit to SW hacks I have seen, thus far, is from our Team Member, Danielle, who hacked the Greenstyle Creations Elevate Crop into a strappy sports bra! Her zip-front sports bra sewn in SW is stunning as well! The photos shown below are a collection of patterns designed for either knit or wovens that our team made the pattern work for them and their SW vision (or in the case of Jenn, to let the kiddos match Mommy in her flowy bamboo lycra maxi!)! Finally, we can't talk The Styled Magnolia and Stretch Woven (SW) without mentioning bags! Our team has created some truly incredible bags and wallets using SW. An extra layer of interfacing goes a long way and gives the bags a smooth, finished look! It also makes for a beautiful, bright, and easy to clean interior! This is seen in the tan Leather-look Iolite Tote with Gold Haze SW lining, as well as the Deep Pink SW solid pairing beautifully with Teal Grunge Floral on canvas for it's interior, as shown on the Cloudsplitter Summit pack in the collection below. We so look forward to all of the future TSM Stretch Woven bag sews! As you can see, Stretch Woven really is such an incredibly versatile base! It is a base that makes you wonder "what can't I make with it?". From Blazers, to Bags, to Sports Bras! Thank you for following along with me, and please continue to share your incredible Stretch Woven sews in our Facebook group! -Tara

  • Sew Cute. Sew Cozy. Sew Cotton French Terry.

Have you had a chance to sew TSM cotton french terry(cft) ? What are your favorite cft sews and makes? Are you a hoodie lover? Joggers? Cozy socks and slippers? A structured raglan? Or an 'all the beanies' type of cft sewist? Me, well, I love 'hoodie weather'; I look forward to it all Summer long! If I'm not directly on the beach, I'm actively wondering when that first cold snap will come. Though, admittedly, I lounge in my TSM cft joggers throughout the summer as well. So, as Spring here began to wane, I realized I needed to begin ordering for Fall temperatures that would eventually make their way to us. I ordered Cambria Floral Dinos (quite possibly for the fourth time!) and Faux Linen in Fuscia from Pick-a-Print on cft for my dino-loving daughter's Fall TSM hoodie. I was so excited to see how these two designs would coordinate, and once they arrived the combo was just as I had hoped. The Fuscia picked up the pink floral tones in the Dinos perfectly! (How brilliant, bright, and intricate are the colors in this design? I just love how both designs printed on the cft! Look at the depth and detail in those dinos!) I went back and forth for some time on a pattern. My yardage sitting on my sewing desk as I wondered which was 'the' perfect pattern to use. Finally, the Little Lizard King Bronx hoodie debuted, and instantly I knew exactly what these two designs were meant to become! I love sewing with TSM cotton french terry for several reasons, but in the midst of a project, the most important being the structure. It doesn't get 'floppy', roll, or become thin and stretched out, yet the lycra content does allow for movement where I need it. I love the weight (at 260gsm) while wearing as well. The thickness keeps us warm, while the drape and softness keeps us from feeling stuffy. My girls (and myself) happily wear their TSM cft all day long. I also appreciate how steadfast the color remains wash after wash and wear after wear. So many of my past cft makes from elsewhere ended up dull and faded, but at the end of the season my TSM still looks new! An extra bonus? Having the wide custom yardage, and two completely adorable options for the LLK Bronx, I couldn't resist sewing up a coordinating sister top for my youngest! I decided to size up two full sizes so she could easily wear it again next fall. My girls were so excited to see their new cozy Dino tops come to life, and I was, too! The combo of base, design, and pattern just could not have been better. I know these tops will be worn in love so many times this Fall, Winter, and into Spring, and will hold up well. If you are looking for a cozy TSM base with a bit of structure and weight, you really can't go wrong with Cotton French Terry! Thank you for following along with me! I cannot wait to see all of your cft makes in our Facebook group! Please be sure to share your favorites with us! -Tara

  • Marveling at Marbles

The Styled Magnolia Marbles first debuted in October of 2019, and became an instant favorite. Since then, the collection of TSM Marbles has continued to grow, and still remains a treasured addition to our fabric stash! Our team has consistently shown so much creativity in how they showcase these designs, and we are inspired by them every round Marbles run. They present just how vast the personality of each design can be! From bright and cheery, to deep and moody, to fun and funky! We couldn't resist compiling a taste of this creativity in one place to help inspire you as well! We first have to highlight the amazing legging sets the team has sewn. There is something just so stunning about a solid pair of TSM Marble leggings. We can't help but say "whoa!" each time our team sews and photos a fresh pair of Marble leggings. What increases the "whoa" factor even more is their creativity in a matching sports bra or crop! They almost always have an incredible pattern hack or pairing up their sleeve, and we are amazed every time! We also love to see the tops and hoodies the team creates. The way they pair the design with the pattern they have selected is flawless every time! It is always fun to see what colors they pull from the design to be their solid coordinates. Or how a pure Marble top can be a complete stunner as well. How brilliantly fun is the neon yellow drawstring on Caroline's Sanguine Marble pullover?! Or how Kate made a tank in Alchemy Marble, then made a pair of leggings with the gusset in the same peeking through? Then still, Sarai's asymmetrical top in Rapture Marble? So much creativity and pure talent! Of course we could not leave out bags and wallets! The detail in the Marbles lends so well toward bag making. Even a small wallet ends up being a statement piece as the design and vivid colors swirl and wrap around the length of it. Our Iolite Tote is another absolute stand out in the Marbles. A stunning way to showcase not only your new tote, but your favorite design as well! Perhaps the biggest challenge here, is deciding what color hardware to pair! Dresses and skirts in the TSM Marbles have also become absolute show-stoppers! They are beautiful as a summer dress, date night outfit, work dress, or for a day downtown! All of our team members are so incredible in their strike sews, but one sew in particular that stunned us was Sarai in her Vertigo Marble skirt and top! Paired together they absolutely look like a gorgeous, flowy, knee-length gown, but are actually a corset top and hi-lo skirt combo! She created both pieces using Athletic Brushed Polyester. We of course also have to talk about all of the options for bottoms and swim! Boardshorts in the Marbles have been a complete win; Jenn wowed us with her husband's in Magma, and we are excited to see more sewn up and shared in our Facebook group with the many new designs from Round 26! Some of our other favorite Marble bottoms have been joggers and shorts, while the options for swim are just endless! We love how Kate put together her crop rashguard sets. Perhaps for now, though, lounging in a pair of Wicked joggers in Bamboo French Terry would be dreamy as we head into fall and cooler temperatures! Well, that's our round up of Marvelous Marbles! Until next time TSM Marbles make an appearance, anyway! It truly has been incredible and fun seeing all of the Team's Marble makes together, yes? We love their creativity and eye for design! The Marbles on their own are so unique and lively, but both of those factors grow exponentially when in the hands of a sewist! Please be sure to share your favorite Marble sews with us in our Facebook group! We love seeing your creativity and design, so much! Thank you for following along with me! -Tara

  • ABP and Endurance XC Explained!

What is the difference between ABP (athletic brushed poly) and Endurance XC? Can I use them for more than athletic patterns? Which is more compressive, ABP or XC? These are questions we hear often on two of TSM's most loved bases. Today, we are going to break all of that down, and talk all things Athletic Brushed poly and Endurance XC! Let us first compare the two bases. What do they have in common? Both are made up of an 80 percent poly/20 percent lycra content. Both bases have 100% (+) four-way stretch. Both have a great stretch and recovery, as well as a compression factor. The two are ideal for athletic wear in their compression, as well as moisture-wicking qualities. Neither ABP or Endurance pills, which is great for all day wear, and knowing our creations will have longevity. Now, how are they different? Endurance XC (as pictured above) is slightly more compressive than ABP, though still comfy enough for all day wear. Endurance is a matte fabric with a cool to the touch feel, very similar to the way swim fabric feels against the skin. The weight of Endurance is higher than that of ABP at 280gsm (ABP being 230gsm), which gives it a more structured drape. This sturdy nature makes it perfect for fitted and athletic items such as leggings, sports bras, tanks, etc. Not to mention it is helpful to camouflage the areas we don't want focus on! Endurance is also a great summer base, as the nylon-like cool feel is ideal for when it's sweltering out. Athletic Brushed Poly (ABP shown above) has a much different texture and feel than Endurance. ABP is incredibly soft to the touch with a brushed texture. It is brushed on both sides, but does not have the 'fuzzy' feeling that can sometimes be associated with Double Brushed Polyester. ABP is smooth on both sides and flowy, yet compressive. The drape of ABP gives it a wide range of versatility. This quality is what makes it a true TSM favorite! Sewists have shared with us their sports bras, leggings, hoodies, dresses, joggers, t-shirts, headbands, jackets, undies, and more sewn in ABP! It, too, is a year round favorite. Being popular for wear, whether it is in the middle of winter, or the height of summer! The smooth, soft texture makes for an amazing legging that isn't season-specific. A more recent addition to the TSM base line up, but an instant favorite for athletic sets, Endurance XC stays exactly where you want it to all throughout your workout! (Sets and leggings above shown in Endurance XC) Athletic Brushed Poly also instantly became a favorite for athletics sets upon it's TSM debut! Supportive for a workout, while also being comfy enough for all day wear! (Athletic sets above shown in ABP) If we dressed both Endurance and ABP up a bit, though, what else could they become? Wow!! Right?! We love seeing the creativity behind each sew, and how versatile a base can be. The above bodycon dresses, tank dresses, rompers, skirts, overalls, even a basic pair of leggings that became a statement piece of an outfit are all Endurance XC! The possibilities in XC truly are endless. The same can absolutely be said for Athletic Brushed Poly! As seen above, ABP can become anything from hoodies to a flowing maxi skirt. We truly love seeing the creativity for this base evolve over time. It will always be a favorite athletic base, but to see it become so much more has been exciting and inspiring. So there we have it! ABP and Endurance explained! We see that they are similar in weight, wearability, compression and moisture wicking, while being different in feel and structure. The love for these two bases continues to grow and grow, and we absolutely understand why! Thank you, friends, for following along with me, and please show us your amazing ABP and Endurance makes in our facebook group! -Tara

  • Unintentional Pairing Win!

Have you ever purchased two different fabrics with entirely separate, and complete outfits in mind; only to have them arrive and discover that they were just meant to be together? That is what happened to me when I ordered Faux Linen in Jam on Rayon Challis, and our R21 design Watercolor Enchantment! I had been so inspired by our team member, Caroline, and her athletic-look outfit that I had fully planned on recreating the same. (Even down to the scrunchie!) The Faux Linen in Jam was meant to be a flowy dress. Once the fabrics arrived, however, I couldn't stop thinking about how completely perfect they were together. I immediately began thinking up new outfit ideas, and how they could be paired. First things first, though. I knew while I was brainstorming Faux Linen tops, I could still get my athletic set sewn up. That was happening no matter what! I love my tights, sports bras, and athletic crops in TSM Endurance XC so much, which is what I had ordered Watercolor Enchantment on. So I moved forward and created this athletic set. I sewed a pair of Super G's leggings from Greenstyle Creations, a Brookings Sports bra from Little Lizard King, and tossed on a previously made (hacked) Houston tank, also from Little Lizard King. My athletic set turned out just as I had hoped! (Who doesn't love it when that happens?!) As an extra little touch of Watercolor Enchantment were the tongues of my shoes! That was with the aid of a very cute, but naughty pup with a love of shoes. She decided one day to remove the tongue and laces from my favorite pair of shoes. They sat and sat as I tried to decide what TSM design on canvas I should try and replace the tongues with. Then Watercolor Enchantment came, and that was that! It needed to be the pop of color in my neutral shoes! A little heavyweight interfacing, a little hand-sewing, new laces, and voila! A new, super cute look! With my athletic set sewn my focus was back on the combination of Jam Faux Linen and Enchantment. I decided a simple tank would be a good start. I would have plenty of rayon left over that could still become something else, but a tank would allow for so many outfits. I sewed a Barcelona tank (only slightly hacked) from Little Lizard King. As soon as I put it on I squealed because it was so cute and so perfect! I grabbed a light jacket, and sandals and bam! Perfect springy/summery/autumn full and complete outfit! I thought again how the two designs and colorways were just meant to be together! The humidity can get heavy where I live in the summer.I quickly realized the decision to make a tank was perfect. I loved, too, how the Faux Linen design, while being classic, was also beautiful and interesting in it's own right. After my first dressy outfit, I couldn't stop seeing more and more full outfits in my head. I realized Fall and Winter would be here quicker than I'd be ready for. Could Watercolor Enchantment be a focal part of a cold-weather outfit?? A basic tank, a Jamie Poncho from Made for Mermaids, my favorite booties, and I'm totally ready for the first cold snap! When everything turns grey outside I'll still feel bright, colorful and cheery, but totally in season and in style! But for now, it is still Summer. Still hot (so hot!). Still humid. So, my Faux Linen rayon challis tank and a pair of shorts will be perfect. I can still pair a little Watercolor Enchantment, though, with my favorite shoes! Even if it's only me that notices those small tongues! Plans are great, and useful, but these two designs showed me how it is ok to go off-script sometimes! A dress in Jam would have been beautiful (and may still happen in the future), but it was completely worth it to set that project aside, and let creativity take over. Please share your TSM mix and match outfits with us in our Facebook group! We love to be inspired by you! Thank you, Friends, for following along, and letting me share my creative side with you! -Tara P.S. I almost forgot my Scrunchie!! I really did have to recreate Caroline's entire outfit! I mean, who doesn't need a flower scrunchie to perfectly match their workout outfit?!
